passages — rituals for modern life

Passages — rituals for modern life is a ritual journey through an entire year. The journey consists of a sequence of five rituals, distributed over a year, that invite you to step consciously into the next part of the year. Each ritual explores another theme and corresponds to the yearly season.

"Thibault is wonderful at holding space, as well as guiding gently step-by-step. Their nurturing kindness and the innate care they showed for me and my process was a blessing. I feel very grateful to have had this journey with them."

Why rituals?

Rituals help us make sense of our lives, the world, and the place we occupy in it. They invite us to take a step back and get a new perspective on all parts that form our daily life. By doing so we can redefine how all our parts come together and create new meaning for us.

Our experience of the world is a subjective feeling that cannot be perceived by others with any of our senses. Rituals enable us to manifest our experience, to make our experience of the world literally sensible. They help us to make our experience become more real.

Rituals are a powerful tool to create and form communities. Sharing your vulnerabilities and longings in a guided setting allows connection with others, and cultivates trust towards yourself and others.

Summer is when everything is buzzing with life, and so we celebrate the interconnectedness of all things. The world would not be the one without the other, no matter the constellation. That’s why the theme of The Celebration is connection.
We will bring our attention to how the different parts of our life impact and affect each other, how the world and people around us bring richness to our lives. This ritual is as much about seeing and listening to the world fully, as much as it is about affirming its various parts. So we venture inwards and  we venture outwards to find in ourselves the voice that says: Yes to life!

The Awakening is a ritual to slowly come back from the winter slumber. We will unravel what we have paused in the time between the years, and bring our focus to the next year. During this ritual we will lay out our ambitions, fears, desires, and dreams for the upcoming months, and start re-activating our momentum. The theme of the ritual is our self — who are we, and who are we going to be?

It is time to set intentions! During The Seed we will plant the seeds of what we would like to see grow in this year. The theme of this ritual is not only ourselves, but also what we would like to bring to this world. Here we prepare ourselves to step into active relation to the world, and bring the change that we would like to see.

Summer is when everything is buzzing with life, and so we celebrate the interconnectedness of all things. The theme of The Celebration is connection, and we will bring our attention to how the different parts of our life impact and affect each other, how the people around us bring richness to our lives. Then it is time to celebrate!

As the days are getting darker, we turn our attention towards the fruits of our work. In The Harvest we return to the seeds we have planted during The Seed, and look what has happened to them. While the ritual in the spring looked at what we wanted to bring to the world, in The Harvest we look at what the world has actually returned to us. The theme here is expectations and gratitude.

The Rest is a ritual to prepare yourself to enter that liminal space at the end of the year. Before we take this passage together, we will come together to revisit the old year, to reflect together, and share the impact that the events of the last twelve months had on us. The theme of the ritual is letting go.

This journey is for people who seek more conscious and magical spaces. Rituals help us make sense of our life — they can connect our bigger vision and dreams with our everyday routine. Passages — rituals for modern life gives back significance and contemplation for modern times that has become void of meaningful rituals to accompany us.

While I encourage you take part in all five rituals to get the fullest experience, you can join as many you like.

It wasn’t at all what I expected, but it was a wonderful, transforming experience. And days later I noticed that I could integrate the walking-towards-the-scary-bits part into my life, from confrontations with people to confrontations with thoughts and feelings, and I’m growing stronger and more courageous still.

Thibault created a personal ritual for me that allowed me to put my everyday life on break and leave my personal habits and behaviour behind for the duration of the ritual. This created a special space for reflection and awareness of what feels meaningful in life. Thibault facilitated a process in which I could explore what I wanted from a ritual and designed it accordingly to my personal context, needs and the narratives that were present with me in my life. I felt well guided in their calm and receptive presence and the way they hold space before, during and after the ritual.

Thibault is a theatre maker, game and ritual designer, and has worked
within the interactive and performative art context over 10 years in various cities over Europe. In 2020 they wanted to apply their creativity to something more socially sustainable and launched “Liminal”, an agency for ritual and ceremonies that creates rituals for communities and individuals.
